John Maxwell famously wrote, “Change is inevitable; growth is optional.”

October 2024 Hearing Protection Month
Hearing Protection Month is here, and it’s the perfect time to talk about noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). NIHL affects millions of Americans. It’s estimated 25% of Americans age 65-74 and nearly 50% of those 75+ have disabling hearing loss. At risk are 30 million U.S. workers regularly exposed to dangerous noise levels, and about 20% of teenagers who use portable music devices. NIHL happens when loud noises damage the sensitive structures in your inner ear, leading to permanent hearing loss over time.
But NIHL is preventable! The Hearing Health Foundation recommends following the simple rule of “Walk, Block, and Turn”—walk away from loud sounds, block your ears with earplugs, and turn down the volume. Whether it’s a concert, sporting event, or a noisy workplace, these steps can help save your hearing.
Musicians and others in loud environments are particularly vulnerable. Musicians are 57% more likely to experience tinnitus (ringing in the ears) and almost four times more likely to develop NIHL than the general population. The stage can reach sound levels of up to 110 decibels, equivalent to a jackhammer.

Preventing hearing loss should begin early. Youth who use portable listening devices should also be mindful of their volume levels. Long-term exposure to loud music through earbuds/earphones can lead to significant hearing loss over time. Our volume-limiting HearMuffs headphones with hearing protection are a great option for young ears under 10.
No matter your age, hearing protection should be worn in any loud environment, such as concerts, fireworks displays, or when using loud equipment like motorcycles, lawnmowers, or machinery. It’s also crucial during activities like shooting sports or in noisy workplaces to prevent long-term hearing damage.
